(Some words by Robby Bonstone)
The Bonstones (IG: @thebonstones) released a song today, a cover of Devo’s ‘Freedom of Choice’. (links below).
It felt very relevant to cover this song in these interesting times. Freedom of choice has always been a rather fascinating subject. Americans have traditionally been very proud of their freedom with slogans like ‘freedom isn’t free’ with regards to the armed forces. But the song seems to imply that we really don’t want freedom of choice but rather the freedom from choice (as referenced in the last chorus). And the allegory of the dog in Ancient Rome, spinning himself to death because he has two bones to choose from.
I gravitate toward the notion of freedom in a society where we have the freedom of speech (or do we now? I’m not so sure anymore) but we are not free since we have to toil away at a job we may or may not love just to keep the lights on and feed the family not say nothing of decent medical care. Are we really free at all?
I want true freedom but not at the cost of starving to death or dying of a preventable ailment. So I don’t really feel I have true freedom. But I do have enough freedom to write and perform songs about freedom (or the lack thereof). And I use my musical voice to shout from the stage that maybe we aren’t so free or maybe we don’t really want to be free. But at least I’m still using my voice while I still have it.
